The Potter has spent years working with clay, and he still turns a finished piece around to see how it came out. He had a pretty good idea before it went into the kiln. Now he gets to see what actually happened.
That’s one of the pleasures of ceramics. You bring the skill and the attention, but the materials have their own part to play. A glaze runs a little farther, a color comes through differently, and sometimes the detail you like best is one you didn’t plan.
With his round goggles, long beard and a piece of his own in hand, this old craftsman looks pleased with the day’s work. The collector card gives him a craft score of nine. I like to think he’s left himself something to work toward.
Red crackle glaze covers the body and neck, with an intricate web of dark lines that gives every part of the surface its own pattern. Glossy black around the mouth, shoulder and base frames the red and brings out its warmth. It’s a bold finish, with small details that keep you looking long after the first impression.

The inside is finished with a black, food safe ceramic glaze to make it completely watertight.
